SOUTHWEST RANCHES — Vontae Davis, who used to play as a cornerback for the Miami Dolphins football team, was found dead on Monday morning in a home in Southwest Ranches.
Vladimir Moise, a long-time friend and business partner of Davis, confirmed that Davis had died.
According to property records in Broward County, the house on SW 178th Avenue is owned by Adaline Davis, who is Vontae Davis’ grandmother.
Police investigators in Davie said they do not suspect any foul play or crime was involved.
Chester Frazier, who used to be Davis’ coach, also confirmed the death on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. He posted:
“We lost a great one today!!! RIP TO @vontaedavis man nothing but good memories of that dude in school!!! Praying for the Davis family!!”
During an online news conference on Monday, Bret Bielema, the head football coach at the University of Illinois, said that although he did not coach Davis directly, he did compete against him when Bielema was an assistant coach in the NFL.
Bielema said Davis was a “very loved” player at Illinois and spoke of Davis’ “passion” and “intensity” for the game. He said, “I just saw an incredibly talented player; checked all the boxes. I knew he was going to be a great not just college player, but in the NFL.”
The Miami Dolphins drafted Davis in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft but traded him to the Indianapolis Colts team during 2012 training camp.
The Miami Dolphins team posted on Twitter: “We are heartbroken by the sudden passing of former Dolphins CB Vontae Davis and extend our deepest condolences to his family & loved ones during this difficult time.”
Davis is perhaps best known for announcing his retirement from football in 2018 in the middle of a game between his team at the time, the Buffalo Bills, and the Los Angeles Chargers.
Davis, who played ten seasons with various teams, was 35 years old.
No cause of death has been released yet while they wait for the autopsy results.
